📅 Timing & Weather
1. When is the best time to trek Mount Rinjani? The ideal time to climb Mount Rinjani is during the dry season, which runs from April to November. During these months, the trails are safer, and you are more likely to experience clear, breathtaking views.
2. Is Mount Rinjani open all year round? No. The Mount Rinjani National Park authority strictly closes all trekking routes from January 1st to March 31st every year due to the heavy monsoon rains, which make the trails slippery and dangerous.
3. How cold does it get on the mountain? During the day, hiking in the lower elevations is hot and humid (25°C to 30°C). However, temperatures drop drastically at night. At the crater rim campsites, temperatures can hover around 5°C to 10°C. If you are doing the midnight summit push, temperatures at the peak can drop to near freezing (0°C to 3°C) with strong winds. Warm clothing is essential!
🏃 Fitness & Difficulty
4. How difficult is the Mount Rinjani trek? Do I need to be a professional climber? You do not need technical mountaineering skills or ropes, but you do need a solid level of physical fitness and mental determination.
-
The Crater Rim treks are challenging but manageable for beginners with decent cardio fitness.
-
The Summit push is highly demanding. The final 3 hours to the peak involve climbing up steep, loose volcanic scree (gravel/sand), which requires strong stamina.
5. I am traveling with children. Can they climb Rinjani? We generally recommend the trek for children aged 10 and older, provided they are active and have previous hiking experience. For families with children, we highly recommend the 2-Day Senaru Crater Rim trek, as it avoids the extreme altitude and exhaustion of the summit push.
🎒 Logistics & Packing
6. Do I need to carry the camping equipment and food? Not at all! When you book with Hallo Rinjani, our incredibly strong local porters carry all the heavy items, including tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, cooking equipment, food, and bulk water.
7. What do I need to carry in my daypack? You only need to carry a small daypack (20L – 30L) containing your personal items for the day:
-
A windbreaker/fleece jacket
-
Raincoat or poncho
-
Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
-
Headlamp (crucial for the summit)
-
Personal medications
-
Camera/phone and power bank
-
A bottle of drinking water and a few personal snacks (chocolates/energy bars)
8. What kind of footwear is required? A sturdy pair of trekking boots with good ankle support and deep grip is highly recommended, especially for the loose volcanic scree on the summit. Trail running shoes with aggressive tread can also work, but standard flat-soled sneakers are dangerous and highly discouraged.
🏕️ Facilities & Food
9. What kind of food is served during the trek? Our porters are fantastic camp chefs! We provide three hot, freshly cooked meals a day. Menus often include delicious local Indonesian dishes (Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng, chicken curry, fresh vegetables) as well as Western-style breakfasts (banana pancakes, toast, eggs) and plenty of fresh fruit.
10. I am a vegetarian/vegan. Can you accommodate my diet? Absolutely. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions, allergies, or preferences when you fill out your booking form, and our chefs will prepare specific meals for you.
11. Are there toilets on the mountain? There are no permanent plumbing facilities on Mount Rinjani. However, Hallo Rinjani provides a private, sanitary toilet tent at every campsite. The porters dig a deep hole and place the tall, private tent over it. Once we break camp, the hole is completely filled in and buried to leave no trace.
🚐 Booking & Transport
12. Does my package include transportation? Yes. All of our standard Rinjani trekking packages include private pick-up and drop-off from major locations in Lombok, including Lombok International Airport, Senggigi, Bangsal Harbor (if you are coming from the Gili Islands), or Mataram.
13. Where will I sleep the night before the trek? Most of our packages include 1 night of accommodation at a comfortable guesthouse in Senaru Village the night before your trek begins. This allows you to rest, acclimatize slightly, and meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing.
14. How do I secure my booking? Once you contact us and agree on an itinerary, we require a small deposit to secure your trekking dates, your National Park tickets, and your guide/porter team. The remaining balance can be paid in cash upon your arrival in Senaru.
